Young Seaman Arrested on Wanganella £125 FINE IMPOSEP

AUCKLAND, This Day. Shortly after the Wanganella arrived yosterday, Customs oflSeials searched the cabin of a passenger from Sydney, and lqter Detective Brady arrested a well-dressed young man. Today Leonard Thomas Thorpe, se.aman, or North Sydney, pleaded guilty to a chargq pf importing into New Zealand a dahgerous drug— namely, six tia§ pf prepared ppium. The Collector pf Custpms said that the ppium, which was vaiued at 30/per tin, was fcund in ihe rafters of the cabin and in a lifebelt. Thorpe admitted that he had brought the oupium. He said it was intended for a Chinese. The maximum penalty was a fine of £500 pr 12 months' imprisonm?nt. Mr. W. E. McKean, S.M.: You knew the ris'k you were taking? Thorne: I think so, yes. Thorpe, who eleeted to be dealt with sumnrtarily, was fined tho minimum penalty of £125 or three months' imprisonjncnt. The Magislratc: Are you able to pay tlie line? Thorpe: No, sir. Tlie police said that Thorpe had £5 in his possession when ho was arrested.
