Mother Dies But Offspring Survive A WORLD RECORD
(By Telegraph-
CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Ivnowing that a ewe in his flock was due to lamb at any moment, Mr W. J. C, Sheat, of Dunsandel, kept a close eye on her, inspecting her several tunes. On Saturday morning between 10.30 and 11 o'clock she commeiiced to lamb and gave birth to seven laipbs. The last one was diffiOult to deliver and apparently the effort was too much for the mother, for she died about 24 hours" after her rccord-hreaking achiovement. All the ■ lambs are living. One was quito a good size, three were nornial and three were 'small. Five were ewes and two were rams. The three small ones were put in the oven for a little while, but after a drink they joined the other members of the family and the weakest at the beginning became one of the nippiest. They were all quite lively to-day. The ewc was a five-year Corriedale bought by Mr Sheat from North Canterbury two years ago. Last year she had four lainba, three of which were alive and one dead when seen in the morning. This contribution of seven lambs is definitely a Nexv Zealand record and from the viewpoint of the survival of thc lot is probably a world record.
