New Line Offers Improved Defences CH0LERA IN SHANGHAI

(Eeceived 14, 12.10 p.m.) NANKING, Sept. 13. The Chinese withdrew without loss and in admirable order to a new line of defence after the demolition of the first three miles distant, after five weeks' intensive bombardment. The new line runa alinost direet from the North Station to Lotien, occupying semipermanent defences and affordxng improved communication beyond the range of fire from the Japanese warships. The Chinese repulsed Japanese marines who "anded at Bias Bay and wrecked several anti-piraey forts. Canton is rushing troops there to prevent the Japanese from creating an airporf. Meanwhile cholera is spreading . at .Shanghai, tlje cases now numbering 450 in the Freneh Goncession and 79 in the International Settlement, 60 of which havo been fatal. Most of the victims were Chinese refugees. The Japanese casualties in the Paoshan sector number 200. The Japanese bombed a fleet of jtmks in Soochow creek and sank three.
