Chinese Resist Fierce Onslaught JAPANESE DR0ME RAIDED

WELLINGTON, This Day. The Chinese Consul has received the following cablegrain from Nanking:— "Despite fierce Japanese onslauglits, the Chinese positions in the Yangtsepoo and Woosung areas continue unchanged. Yesterday the severest engagement took place at Jukong Wharf. The Chinese recorded further gaine at the Lotien sector, while Yuehpo continues to be in Chinese hands. "An entirq battalion of Chinese troops defending PaoBhan against overwhelming odds and. a devastating bombaxdment by Japanese warships and planes fell on September 7 with the eity. Onljr two oj three wounded
soldiers survived. "It is now known that the Japanese concentrated gunfire from 80 warslxipe and used over 20 tanks and a nuinber of planes. besides a large infantry force, to capture tlio cjty, in which Ihe Cliineso battalion hold out for two days. "Tbo Chinese air force yeslorday bombed the Japanese warships ou the Whangpoo river and the Japaneso air field at Yangtsepoo. About 10 Japanese planes are believed to have been destroyed. "Retaliating, the Japanese bombed Nantao, demolishing a large number of Chines» honses and killing a considerable number of civilians."
