In the final Budge defeated Yon Cramm, 6 — 1, 7 — 9, 6 — 1, 3—6, 6 — 1. Mlle. Lizana (Chile) defeated Mlle. Jedrzejowska (Polaud), 6 — 4, 6 — 2. - The greatest crowd in the histoiy; of American tennis besieged the gates and oifi'ered eight to ten dollars for tickets priced at 2.75 dollars. Thousande were shut out. A packed stadium with a eapacity crowd of 14,000 saw one of the most thrilling matches in memory. Budge 's threg 6 — 1 sets do not truly reflect |the play. Von Cramm. battled valiantly, but Budge was invincible. Von Cramm was brilliant in the second set, sdrving and smashing vioiously and winning after a series of bristling rallies. Budge recovered in (the third set, driving and volleying flawlessly. Von Cramm cleverly mixed Jobs and deep cross-court drives in the fpurth, He was slightly tired in the fifth and was -• unable to cope with Budge 's sweeping drives. Mlle. Lizana won without trouble, countering Mlle. Jedrzejowska 's hardhitting attack by means of top-spin back-hand drives and baffling dropehots. After the presentation ceremony in the crowded marquee, Mlle. Lizana fainted and did not revive until carried to the club-house, where strychnine was injepted.
