Farwards and Backs Combine Well 31 P01NTS TO NINE Showing an encouraging return - to form, Hawke's Bay trounced Wellington by 31 points to 9 at McLean Park, Napier, on Saturday. In all departments of the game the home team was well on top, and well supplied with the hall by - a f orward pack which bad recovered its lost energy the backs piled up the points- in fine style. The Wellington attack was nullified by the fast work of the Hawke's Bay pack and the sterling defence of the backs, and the day's play gave many spectators the encouraging feeling that Wednesday's encounter with the Springboks will not see the province disgraced. Lambourn Leahy Despite the fact that they faced a fresh breeze, Wellington attacked strongly and twice noorly «cored. the Bay pack appeared fit and eager but the All Black Lainboarn, was too good at the etage for Doug. Dalton in the scrums. O'-. Halloran came round very fast from the base of a scrum near the line and was almost over when he lost possession and was stopped. Soon after Todd missed a penalty when Apsey was caught offside. It was not long before the pressure was relieved, however, and after Wellington had been on defence a few minutes Tori Reid secured in midfield. The big forward drew Vartan and lobbed a long pass to Bowman, who came up quickly on the outside and romped round beliind the posts for a typical Bay forward try. Bradley goaled easily. Hawke's Bay 6 Wellington ... 0 A dangerous loose rush by Wellington reached the line, Thomson and Pringle brushing.past Dyer with Bishop and Wells in support, and it was a strenuous piece of work by Apsey and Robins that got Hawke's Bay out of trouble. ' The venue of play changed imniediately. Wellington , gained possession from a line-out in their own territory and Apsey put his boot to a dropped pass and followed the rolling ball over the line for a try. Bradley converted. Hawke's Bay ... 10 Wellington ... 0 Hawke's Bay Forwards Show Dash. Playing with a dash that had not been seen tliis season the Hawke's Bay forwards were unbeatable. They followed up vimfully, Dalton in partieular going oif the mark iike a bullet, and wherever a kick fell there was a Bay forward to take it. Reid Jackson and Dalt-on, hunting the leather hard, bustled Vartan badly, and when they lost possession Apsey appeared to start the movemeut afresh. Lambourn emerged from a ruck in possession and eluding Dyer set oif for the line. He did not get away with it, however, as the fullback pulled hina down from behind. .M. Devine, however, brother of the Bay centre used more guile. Drawing the full-back he punted over his tiead, being narrowly beaten in the race for the ball. Similar Hawke's Bay sorties were - more numerous, but at last Welling- ' ton seized the opportunity when P. 1 Reid missed a tackle, H. Wright paving the way for a try by Veitch, converted by Todd. The centre dashed for the corner, dodging opposing backs in a mos't bewildering manner; Apsey then came in from the wing, ran beliind Reid to take a pass and speed aeross the line on a rigbtangled tack. Herbert again missed. Before the cheers had died away Herbert scored in the other corner after a back movement, Dyer missing the kick. Hawke's Bay 1 28 Wellington ... 5 Neat Field Coal. ^Vhen Wellington attacked for almost the first tiine sincu the interval, Griffiths notched a ncat field goal. Bradley left the field and was replaced by Devine. Hawke's Bay 28 Wellington ... 9 A solo run by Devine from 35 yards out curved right through the Wellington backs from a scrum, and not a hand was laid on him uutil the ball was grounded over tlie line.
