HASTINGS ORPHANS
Another Enjoyable Korero That considerable interest is being sliown in the aetlvities of the Hastings Orplmas' Club is evidenced by the large and enthusiastic gathering of members at the eighth korero of ■ the season held last evening. Deputy-Chief Orphan N. Eoach was in tne ehair in the unavoidable absenee of Chief Orphan Campbell. Tho club's orc' estra opened proceedings with an overture, after which Orphan- H. J. Crieve contributed two songs and Orphan M. Hunter entertained the' gathering with a number of r/iort stories. The short t.Jk of the evening was in the hands of Mr Norman Mclvenzie, of Napier, his subject bcing, "Football Eeminiseenees and -Pei'sonatities. " The speaker interestingly traced the origin of the game before Rugby in its present form was evolved, and then traced its development down to the present time. Ile gave a brief survey of Eugby in Ilawke' Bay during past years, with a number of huniorous stories and happenings regarding some of H.B. Eugby personalities of recent years. The supper adjournment was then taken, after which the orchestra played the selection "Iolanthe," Orphan J. Sticklaiid gave two old-time favourite songs, in the chorus of which the gathering joined. Orphan Warren was heard in a number fo aecordeon solos, which were greatly appreciated. Another of the evening 's highlights was the ' ' Orphan 's wrestling championship. " This burlesque proved_ beyond all doubt that the Orphans' Club possesses some fine mat men. A sound knowledge of all legitimate and other liolds was demonstrated by the contestants, Orphans G. Lloyd and Guy Hardenberg, wliose three rounds provided great ainusmeent, the former winning on a "foul." Orphan Ted Rivers made a very efficient third man in the ring. Orphan Harry Gill officiated at the "milce" and gave a witty commentary on the bout. Orphan Summers played two pianoaccordeon solos, and Orphan Donald Davies elosed the programme with a number given in his usual good style.
