Diet Main Factor in Prevention
(By Telegraph
AUCKLAND, Last Night. "As a result of my travels I am more convinced than ever that diet is the main factor in the prevention of dental diseases," said Mr. T. A. Hunter, of Wellington, who returned to the Dominion by the liner Akaroa, after representing the New Zealand iiovernment at the International Dental Congress at Vienna and the New Zealand Association at a meeting of the Empire Dental Associations in London. Mr. Hunter has been abroad for 18 months. Mr. Hunter said that in the coutb© jf his wide travels, he had an oppui~ Junity of examming the dental concution of children in different countries, particularly in Europe. His contention \vas illustrated by the case of Portugal where, he said, the people were very poor and could not alford refined and concentrated foods, such as white flour products and sweets. Their general diet was coarse rye bread, dried fish cooked in oil, vegetables, which every cottager grew at his door, and citrus fruits, which were cheap. Mr. Hunter added that milk was scarce, yet the children had beautiful teeth.
