Drifts Hopeleit In Harbour

AUCJiLiAjN JJ ,L.ast JNignt. Bound for Stanley Bay this morning, the Devonport Perry Comjjany's Pupuko was disabled when a gudgeon pin in the piston became twisted. Her engines were useless and the ferry drifted np the harbour with two passengers on board. Blasts from the Pupuke's whistJe attracted the attcntion of the master of the ferry Makora, which was making for Devonport, and soon the passengers in the Makora could see that the Pupuke waB in difficulties. The Makora 5s course was diverted and she ranged alongside the disabled ferry. The two passengers were taken on board. Tliey were taken to Devonport and then trausported by car to Stanley Bay. Meanwhilo, offiaials oi' the Devonport Ferry Co. had observed the plight of the Pupuke and had sent a request to the Auckland Launch and Towboat Co. to dispateh the steam tug' Kumea to its assistance. By the time the tug reached the ferry it had drifted some distance up harbour on the incoming tide and was broadside on to its course. The crew of the tug had little difficulty in bringing the two boats together, and after a few minutes the Kumea turned back to Aucklaud with the Pupuke lash •4 alongside. A
