The excavating uiacliine was tlien moved to Ihe 290 chains pcg, just beyond the wool scouring works, and tlie laying of tho 42-inch pipes was proeceded with. The second machine continued laying similar pipcs from the beach eud towards the main HastingsNapier road. Altogether last month 871 chains of pipes wero laid, of this distance 62 i cliains of 452-inch piping was laid.
