Hastings Man and Wife Injured

PALMEESTON N., . This Day. For no apparent reason a modern saloon car left the Ashliurst-Palmerston North highway yesterday -aftp/noon to crash into a power-pole with such forc.e that the pole was coinpleteiy broken iu two and the engine of the car damaged beyond repair. The accident happened on a straight strctch of road near the Te Matai intersection. The, driver was Mr. Charles Gardr.cr of Southland road, Hastings, and a principal of the firm of McLeod and Gardner . Ltd., of Hastings. Mr Gardner sulfercd a broken upper' jaw, cuts and abrasions, and Mrs Gardner a fractured left leg. Both are now inmates of hospital. Mr. and Mvs. Gardner were on their way to Palmerston North. It was impossible last evening to ascertain tho reason for the accident. People in a following car were amazed to see Mr. Gardner 's car suddenly veer over to the wrong side of tho road and crash into the pole. The power service was , not interrupted. The condition of Mr. and Mrs. Gard- j ner last evening was not serious, und they were reportcd to bo progressipg satisfactorily. 1 inquiries made this morning reveal- j ea that Mr and Mrs Gardner both passed a comfortable night. Mr Gardner is expected to leave the hospital within a few days, but Mrs Gardner, who is suffering considerably from shoc-k, will not be so fortunate and it may be a little longer before she will be able to do so.
