Wharf Labourer Sent to Gaol

WELLINGTON, This Day. Lawrence Gifford, aged 38, a wharf labourer, who pleaded guilty to two charges of theft of articles to a total value of £5 7/- tlie property of the New Zealand Shipping Company, was sentenced by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., to three months hard labour On one charg© and 14 days on the other. the terms to be concurrent. It was stated that Gifford Was foUnd coming off the Piako with a box of he was carrying, and the sfearch of his home i'evealed two pairs of ladiefe1 stockings, tWo pencils and a pen, taken by him from the ship the day befol'e. His eai'niilgs for tho past twelve months Were stated to be £431 16/8, an avefage of £9 a xveek. The Magistrate remarked tliat wharf lahourers were in a position of trust and were trustdcs for the ownefs of the calgo as well as 1 oi' the shipping people. There Wero in a position to earn good money and that Was all the more reason tliat they sliould not steal. Mr Mosley did not agree with counsel's statemeiit that cargo pillaging was more prevalent formerly than now.
