Finely scraped turnip mixed with a little vinegar makes quite a nice sauce. , Corkscrew, A substitute is to screw into cork a long-necked screw with a piece of string attached. Pull the string and the cork comes out. Mint Outter. A safety razor blade fitted into a piece of wood makes an excellent mint or parsley cutter. „ Picnic. Cover the cork of the vacuum flask with grease-proof paper. Crochet Hooks. Push points into corks and so prevent them rusting. ' Handkerchiefs. Soak coloured handkerchiefs, when washing them in water containing a teaspoon of turpentine, for twenty minutes. The colours will be saved. / Streaky Clotjies. . Streakiness is often caused by omitting to move about clothes when they are in the blueing water. Refresher. 1 Try a handful of oatmeal in the bathwater. It is good for the skin and most refreshing. Stopping Draughts. Don't you think (says a correspondent) some people never make winter and the early spring really comfortable? Good fires, .good chairs and good curtains help one to forget the howling winds without, but I like also a few sandbags for my doors, especially for those French doors leading out to the garden. Have you noticed that the tendency of the moment is to open an outside door, sometimes iwo, directly into the living-room? Thosedoors call for my sandbags. Make the bags of some strong material, giving generous proportions, and tlien fill them with sand, or, failing that, sawdust. Sew a curtain ring to the end of each bag, so that it .can hang up neatly when not in use.
