WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
Tho Pakowhai Womcn's Instituto held the September meeting in the Ohurch Hall, Mrs. Wliittmgton presiding. Thrce new members wero wclcoiued. It was decided to help the Makogai Leper Station with gifts from the members, Misses E. Gabrielsen a.nd J. Pedersen wero appointcd delegates to the District Federation's half-yearly council meeting. A 6d bring and buy was held for tho S.P.O.A. The president thankcd all who had hclped to make the recent concert and dance such a success, and also Mrs. Preston-Thomas and "Mrs. Graham ior donations toward a native kowhai and anothcr shrub, Avhich were plantecl in : tlie scliool gronnds on Axbor Day. Mrs. , Kolly, of Taradale, gave a demonstra- i tion of egg-shell worlc and brought along several articles to show members. Miss Iiita Howard took the GoldenThrcad talk for the afternoon. Her subject was India. Oompetitions resnlted — ^Article made from old fclt bats: Miss D. Lowe 1, Mrs. Russell and Mrs. Mitchell 2, Mrs. March 3. Bcst bloom: Mrs. Gledhili (liyacinth) I, Mrs. Bruuton (uareissi) aud Mrs. Cush'mg (eameliia) 2, Miss Howard and Mrs. HoAvard (Iccland poppies) 3. Mrs Howard came first in tho shrub competition and Mrs. Patriclc second. A talk on the xound-lable conferenco of Women 's Instituto representatives recently held in Wellington was given by Mrs. C. J. Baker. Hostesses who served tca were Mesclamcs Lissettc, McDonald, Mitchell, Parker and Miss J] Parkcr. * ,
