MR. S. F. ANDERSON

By tho death of Mr Gidney Francis Anderson, of Taradale, yesterday, Hawke's Bay, and the Taradale and Greenmeadows districts particularly, has lost oue of its oldest and most esteemed settlers. The late Mr Anderson settled at Taradale in the very early days, and with a Mr Gilberd established the nursery of Gilberd and Anderson, one of the first of its kind in the provinee. This business was carried on by the ' partners for some years, after which Mr Anderson took it over and carried it on on his own account, later transferring it to two of his sons, who continued it in conjunction with an orchard and small vineyard. Mr S. F. Anderson was some years manager of the Greenmeadows vineyard (now the Greenmeadows Orchard) for the late Mr A. M. Randall. Ho was also for a timo Governmeut viticuiturist and oreliard inspector. Advancing years, however, e.aused him to relinquish active work some years ago. and he had since lived quietly in retirement, having reached tho advanced age of SS years at the time of his death. The late Mr Anderson was a man of sterling worth and character, a publicspirited citizen in the highest and best sense of the term, and an active worker for all causes which wero for the betterment of the people and the progress of the district. He held office for many years on the Taradale River Board, Taradale School Committee, Taradale Town Board, Taradale Public Library, and other bodies, of almost all of which he had at some time or another been cliairman. He was also a member of the Court Redclyffe, Ancient Order of Foresters. To his two sons and two daughters, in their bereavement, the sympathy of a very wide circle of friends will be extended.
