Japanese Offensive From Woosung STIFF CHINESE DEFENCE

WELLINGTON, This Day. The Chinese consul has received the following cablegram from Nanking: — "According to foreign observers at Shanghai, the Japanese plan for a major offensive from the Woosung area has euffered a decisive setback, as the Japanese so far- have made no appreciable gain, due to the stiff resistance of the Chinese troops. "Japanese attempts to land at several points at Pootung under a heavy naval barpage from the Whangpoo river were succcssfully repulsed yesterday. "A prolongcd artillery duel between the Japanese warships in the Whangpoo river and the Chinese batteries at Pootung again brought thc war close to Shanghai, wliere ihe gunfire was plalnly visible from the Bund. The Chinese batteries claim to have hit a Japanese destroyer and one transport. "The battle started when a Japan-. ese destroyer machine-guimed and sank a sampan containing one Chinese woman and four men. "Japan is sending two more divisions on a full war basis to Shanghai. "Japanese incendiary bombs caused several huge fires at Chapei. Hundreds of workers' homeu have been destroyed."
