U.S. Labour Leader Attacks Roosevelt ALIENATED SYMPATHIES

The leader of the Committee of Industrial Organisation, Mr John Lewis, in a nation-wide broadcast, inferentially threatened President Roosevelt with the cousequences of alienating the sympathies of organised Labour. He said : "It ill behoves oue who supped at Labour's table to curse witb equal fevour Labour and its adversaries when tliey are locked in deadly embrace," He also assailed the Democrats for their failure to pass the industrial legjslation) adding: "The spectacle of mein-
bers of Congress hiding in order to pievent a quorum acting on Labour measures emphasises the perfidity of politicians." President Roosevelt on Labour Day issued a statement. in the course of which he said that mistakes had been made on both sides in the current Labour disputes, due to mental distrust and bitter recrimination. He urges peaceful settlements auci no strikes in the future. The Presidsnt sdmitted by inference that. the V/agner Act might need alterations.* He said his statement, which had been prepared before Mr John Lewis made his radio broadcast, maintaineck the tone of neutrality concerning wliich Mr Lewis had complained.
