BY AIR TO U.S. Two More Survey Flights to be Made PREPARATION OF BASE

WELLINGTON, This Day. New Zealand and the United States will be linked by a flying-boat service before the end of the year. This was revealed here to-day. Mr. Harold Gatty, representative o± the Pan-American Airways, which conducted survey flights in Mareh last, is now in Auckland making arrangements for the service, owhich will be preceded by two further survey flights before the expiry of the agreement between the company and the Governmeiit. . „ In the regular service, Sikorsky 4-.B flying-boats will be used until the company obtains delivery of the new 40-60 passenger Boeing flying-boats about April next. Mr. Gatty $ t present is negotiatmg with tho Auckland Harbonr Board for a landing-area, barges and shore facllities and is determining the location oi' a radio station. Constructional experts will arrive by the next boat to supervise the work. It is stated authoritatively that the United -States Burean of Air Commerce Opinion that the Howland and Jarvis Islands are inipractieable for _ the Southern Pacific service is entirely outside the company 's plans, as the route which it is proposed to follow is that of the survey of March last — - Honolulu, Kingman Reef, Pago Pago, Auckland.
