Programme for Spring Meeting Tbe spring programme of tbe Hawke's Bay Jockey Club bas been frained and will be publisbod early uoxt vveek. Tbe opening event will be tbe Tomoana Highweight of £110 run over nino furlongs for borses tbat at tbe time of starting bave raced in tbree burdle races or steepleebases and for borses eligible to run in back ilat races. Only recognised steeplecbaso oi burdle-race jockeys, approved by tbe stewards, sball be eligible to ride. It was only after lengthy deliberations tbat tbis race was included instead of a mile and a-balf burdle race, and eventually tbe committoe considered tbat owners would be better cutered for wlth tbe liighweight. Tbe Triai Stakes, for liorses tbat bave not won a race at time of starting, carrying a stake of £100, run over furlongs, does servico for tbe novicos. Tbo ibird race lieted is tbe Gloucesler Gup, of £105, includiug a miniaturq cup to tbe value of £10 each to tbo owner and rider of tbe winner. Tbis race will bp a dccided attraction to tbo spring meoting so tbat Hawke's Bay is indeed fortunatc to bave tbe bonour oi staging tbis importanto tropby event. Tbe handsome gold Gloucester Oup bas already arrived bore witb tbe two miniatures and later will be on sbow ia a sbop window in Hastings. Tbo two-year-old race, tbe Nursery Handicap, of £110, over four furlongs, foUows tbo Gup, aud witb tbe best lot of youngsters seen in this district for tbe last decade, this race will be also a most interesting event, Tbo priueipal handicap of ihe day, tbe Spring Handicap, is wortb £1/5, second £25 and third £10 from tbe stake, and is over a course of li mile. This stake is £25 in excess of last season 's. . The hack eprinters will have theu show in the Little Flaxmere, worth £110, over six furlongs, £20 and £10 respectively going to the second and third place-getters. The Plying Handicap, of £120, sik furlongs, condudes the programme. This race has also been slightly increased in value. . , A plcasing altcratxon that has boon made in all the races is the increaeing of third xnoncy from £5 to £10. Owners and trainors have for some time objeetod to only £5 being given, as it rneant that altlxougk a horse fxnisbed in that position, after paying nominations, acceptances, riding money and plating a loss occurred although the handicapper ^ would penalise two or tlxree pounds for iinislxing there. The meeting is to be held on Saturday, October 9. Generally the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club nomination day is a Friday, but eo as not to clasb with the Marton race-day it has been decided that nominations for the Hastings races close on Monday, September '27, at S p.m.
