REAL FACTS TO BE FACED
It is high time, says the "Soutbland Times," that members or jme Government turned to face the real facts of New Zealand's economy and learned wbat they continually ignore or deny — tbat tbe prosperity of New Zealand and tbe living standards of its people depend largely on market values for butter, cheese, meat and wool 12,000 miles away, and that a reckless raising of intemal costs cannot be sustained unless tbose values increase proportionately. Mr Nash recoginised this when he said at a Cbamber of Commerce luncheon in Wellington tbat "the standard of life that could be experienced by tbe people of New Zealand would be higher or lower in proportion to tbe trade the Dominion bad with tbe United Kingdom ' ; but Mr Savage, who was also a gpest at tlie luncheon, contradicted bis colleague by saying that he "felt" it was not necessary "to get down to the living standards of otber nations" and that the Government was building a "paradise in the Pacific." Until this country bas a Government and a Prime Minister wbose actions are governed by facts instead of by instincts and "feelings," it will have to suffer such short-sig hted and dangerous experimeuts as . tbe guaranteed prices seheine.
