BRILLIANT CARNIVAL BALL ENDS WAIPUKURAU QUEEN CARNIVAL

Amid tho fanfaro of trumpets, blowing of liu whistles and squoaliers, cheers and happy laughtcr, Miss Jacqucline Ormond was dcclarod Queen of tho Caruival at tho Carnival Ball, organiscd by tk£ I'orangahau and Waipukurau Quccn Committccs, wliich was held in tho Municipal Theatre, Waipukurau. Aftor months of arduous labours by the various queen committees the campaign organiscd by the Central Hawke 'a Bay Rugby Sub-Union to raise funds culniinated in this spectacular fancydress carnival ball, which was attended by hundreds of dancers all in gay fancy dress who had abandoned dull care and 6ct out from tho first dance to make the evening a memorable one, and in this thoy tvere kiglily successful. The Porangahau committee, with Mrs R. O. Boiusfield as the seeretary and the Waipukurau committee, with. Mr S. LJeterkins as seeretary aro to be higlily commended on the successful arrangements. The hall was appropriately decorated for the occasion. Suspended overhead were clusters of colourful balloons and stfeamers, the corners of tho hall beitig filled. with pale pink prunus blossoiu, whilo on the stago were tall jars filled with similar blossoms. and along the front wras greenery and many-hued paper poppies. From a decorated dais placed in tho middle of the dance hall Les. Henry's orchestra played delightful danco music. The grand marcli, guided by Mi&s Joan Harker, was a most spectacular sigkt and one noticed prim Victoriau ladies marching with gipsies, Jack and Jill with their small buckets, Chinese ladies and gentlemen, a demure Duteh girl aud baggy breeches, a highwayman and a gipsy lass, schoolgirls and boys, a stately rajah, Mr Hyde and gollywog, harlequins, Spanisli dancers, farm lads and dainty .shepherdesses and numerous others, all creating a riot o'f colour^ which made the task of the judgos, Mesdames P. F. Wall and E. Broad, a most difiieult one. The prizes were eventually awarded to Mr Hyde (Mr E. Dod) and gollywog (Mrs Meredith). Very ploasing were the items given by pupils from Miss Joan Harker 's school of dancing. In the first, a "Carnival Ballet," the dancers appears in carnival costumes, short skirts of tangerine inset with gold tightbodices, with high medici collars, higli gold peaked hats, with streamcrs tied to the crown, and each dancer had a baTloon tied to one wrist. Thoso taking part were: Misses Eutk Hepburn, Olga Bowley, ,Vera Malkin, Mary Fleming M'arjorie Clark, Margery Urquhart, Blanche Tinney an.d D. Lourie.

Tho soeund ltom, u "Tap Ballet," was given by the Misses Joan Harker, M. Matthews, 0. Bowler and Ituth Hepburn, who appeared in white and black check bloomers, xvhite cutaway coats, big check bows and check pill-box hats with chqck gauntlets. Both of tbeso itcins rcceived well-deserved eneores. During Ihe ovcning the merry throng were kepL acquaintd Avith tho etate of tlio polliug booths and at 11 o'clock Mr A. McCoruiiok, chairmau of tho ltugby Sub-Union, aunuunced tho final count which placed Miss Jacqueliue Ormond t the Borungahau Queen, first Avith votcs, Ongaonga Queen second Avith 19,920 voles, Takapau Quoeu third with 10,998 votes, Waipukurau Queen fourtk with 1G,57G votes, Otane Queen fifth with 8.002 votes. The totai sum taken was £1175 and Mr J. D. Ormond, jnr., gcnerously brought the ainount up to £1200. Tn making tho announcement Mr McCormick congratulated Miss Ormond and her committee and extended grateful thanks to the otlier hard-working committees and the publie for their generous eupport. Miss Ormond suitably responded. The winner of tho pony competition was Miss Molly Polhill and of the fat bullock competition Mr Oswald Nelson, A delicious savoury supper was sct out on long tablos on whick were bowis of fragrant spring flowers. Brisk business ivas done at a fancy paper hat and squeaker stall controlled by Mrs Bousfield and helpers, who had made hundreds of hats and caps which found a ready sale and all helped towards the gaiety of this highly successful ball.
