After a confident opening stand by Barnett and Gimblett, who put on 117, two of the English Avickets 1'ell bel'ore lunch in the cricket match between New Zealand and an Engiish eleven. Cowie took his 100th first-class wicket by dismissing Gimblett. Donnelly made a spectacular high bacliward boundary catch antbdismisscd Barnett. The fieldmg maintained its accuracy and alertness, features being a smart return by Hadiee to Roberts resulting in Edrich being run out? a aifficult low catch by Page at point, quick work by Tindall and smart fielding at cover point by Wallace, who earned applause. A bright mnth-wlcket partnership of 121 by Chapman and Valentine gave England a formidable total. Valentine hit sixes oif Ivloloney, Dunning and Roberts. The iatter scattered his stumps with the first ball after the century. . Cowie was continually dangerous but was unlucky. Chapman. was dropped early ; then three times the ball grazed the stumps.
