Disabled Returned Man Falls from Launch RESCUE EFFORT FAILS

PALMERSTON, N. This Da.v. Wilson Angus McPhail, a ffisabled returned soldier ancj the father pf ten children, the youngest of wliom is only a few months old, lost his life by drowning in tlie Manawatu river ypsterday afternoon at Manawatu Heads. The tragedy occurred at 3.30 p.m. Mr McPhail was on board a lauuch near the liepds and was seen by a youth, AiJan Sim, to topple over the side into the river. Sim pluckily swam out to Mr McPhail and actually succeeded in reaching him, but found the man more than he could manage. He was forced to let go, and Mr McPhail disapppared. Constable Owen, ot Foxton, eommenced dragging operatjong, but had not succeeded in recqvering the bocty by nightfall. Mr McPhail is survived by his widow as well as ten children,
