Hockey END OF THE SEASON
"Penalty Corner.")
Much Improvement Among Juniors REPRESENTATIVE GAME
(By '
Last Saturday 's hockey was practically the wind-up for the season as far as Napier club competitions are concerned. On Saturday next the Kiwi senior teain joumeys to Palmerston North to play a match with the Broadway Club, while the Napier juniors will be on tour to "Wellington at the same time. The Te Awa women 's team too, I fancy, has some outside games to play, as is usuai with them at the end of the season. This club's success in the women 's senior championship was the reward of persistence and getting into form early in the season. The standard of hockey in both men 's and women's series of games was higher than it ha.s been for some seasons past, and hockey supporters can look forward to some good play next season. It is quite evident from the- improvement shown all round that the coaches have been busy initiating the younger players iiito the finer points of the game,, and I 'cahnot remember a season previously which has shown s o many juniors developiflg form good enough to justify chenj being considered for inclusion in the senior ranks when oldef players drop out or are transferred. Representative Gaane. Saturday 's representative game be--tween Napier and Wairoa was one of tka high lights of the season. Both sides were responsible for sdine fifstclas3 hockey, both in attack and' defence, and Napier 's actual superiorlty in play was hardly as great as the score showetl. A three-to-two margin would have been a tfner indication of the roIative merits of the two sides. Obstrucbion Tactics. One of the players in the Scinde B team piaying against Kiwi White Showed h decidedly stfohg tendency to adopt obstruction tactics as part of his game. The obstruction wat penalised on two or three occasions, but at other times was apparently uflnoticed by the referee. Oue case of obstruction resulted in a fathdf amusing incident. The Seinde piayer put ont his foot when dispnting poSSession of the ball with | a Kiwi White. The ihtentidn seemed to be to trip Up the Kiwi piayer, but his foot became locked' in that of the othef piayer, and both came to grief, the pair describing a cifcle ifl the aif after the manner of a Oatherine wheel. The spectators were highly amused. but the effeflding piayer was justly peualised. Competition Winners. "Benaity Corner 's" congratulations all round to the winners of the respective championships. They have all deserved their suCcesseS) but some of the other teaifig haVe been equally deserving, but all cannot win, and the losing teams are all good Spdrts Who are aCcepting the position a§ aii good sports Jo.'
