(By

Although no senior matches were played last Saturdiay in Central Hawke's Eay, spactators at Central Park saw two exciting games of football. Both were unfortunately played at the same time, and many of the spectators on the spacO between the two grounds developed serious eye-trouble through looking two "ways at once. In the main game between Te Aute and a Victoria University College teain the result was in doubt until the last minute. At half-time Te Aute led 6 — 3, and when the game ended the score was unaltered, but on several occations in the second spell each side iil tuni appeared ccrtain to scOrc. The 'Varsity players, although lighter Ihan tlieir opponents, were speedy and sound in defence, and tlieir "forwards gained possession from nearly , every scrum and line-out. On the day Te Aute were a disappointing team. Their forwards, • the main offenders, were beaten fOre and aft.by a lighter pack had the Te Aute backs received a fair shnre of the ball they would have scored several more tries. Most of their few passing ruslies broke doWn at the centre, where over-eagerness caused Murray to mishandle several times. With the exception of Mttl'ray, a sub-union representative of two years' standing, the Te Aute backs were very good. Among both sets of backs the tackling was .excellent. In the junior matcli, ( on (No, 2 ground, Porangahau beat Te Aute 14 — S, but half-way through the second si?cll the scores were level at 8 — 8. Although played so late in tho • season this matcli was one of the most keeiily fcuglit of the year. More resdlutd backs finally won the game for Porangahau. Challenges for Takapau. As cdmpetition winners the Takapau senior team have received challenges from Porangahau, Gld Boys and Otane. These ehallcnge matclies are played for the Central Park Challenge Clip, which each year is dcfended by the senior team which wiris the competitiori. As runnei's-up, Waipukurau were to liave played the first malch for this trophy last Saturday, btit they wcfo unable to field a team. Thifd Graae rinai. The final oi' tho third giade compotition will be played next Saturday between Takapau nnd To Aute A. The Old Boys' third grade team, after a late enti'y into the competition, came vfel'y close to winning, but the school holidays disdrganiscd tlieir fifteen and last Saturday they wOre forced to defatiit to Takapau.
