Changes Made to the Cap Pilpr VISIT T0 TROPICAL ISLES

AUCKLAND, Last Niglit. Classified by Lloyds as a three-masted scliooner, at present rigged as a thrcemasted barquentine, the C'ap Pilar wlien she leaves Auckland in about a fortniglit's timo will be sailing under a third rig — as a quasi-borquentine. In addition to being square-rigged on her foremast, she will carry a triangular main topsail, slieeted up from tlio yard to the throat. This will give her an unusual appearimce, but shouJtl oflcr greater stability when running with the wind well abaft the beam. Preparator^1 to sending alolt tlie new yard, which since the start of the voyage has been stowed below, tho main topmast has been lowered, and to-day the crew wcre engaged in splicing eyes in v/iro cables for setting up additional backstays. In the eariier part of tho voyage the Cap Pilar did not carry a main gaff topsail, a staysail being set between the main and mizzen masts Above her spanker, liowever, she has a mizzen gaff topsail. Tlie alterations to tlie accomniodation in the fo'c'sle and the after saloon are now almost complete and the barquentine ivill soon he docked for serajiing and painting. From Auckland she will sail direct for Alangareva, in the Cainbier Archipelago, and then through FT'ench Oceauia to the Marquesas Islands, where it is anticipated tlie vessel will remain some tiine. This group will be explored by expeditiong in the barquentiue's lii'oboats. Leaving behind tlie south-casb trade winds the Cap Pilar will beat through the doldrums into the northcrn hemispkero bound for the Hawaiian Islands. From there her sf hedulee remains unalterod, but al'toi putting into Jrian FT'anciseo and xjasslllS through tlie Panama Canal she may visit Jamaicu. Two young New Zealanders have already joined the vessel and three more have signed on. It is understood also that the services of a medical inau have been obtained for the continuation of tlie cruise. One of the youths who joined in Australia, yesterday left the vesseel and will later return to his home in Sans Souci, Sydney. One or two others of the crew may accept appointments in New Zealand.
