(Received 1, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 31. An unknown submarine torpedoed and sanlc the Soviet steamer Timiryazev in the Mediterranean near Tigtsirt. Algerian fishermen rescued and landed the crew. A Madrid message says that an unknown submarine attacked three mercliantmen under escort' by a Spanish Government armed trawler off Solademar on the Catalan coast. After a gun duel the submarine submerged. Its fate is unknown. The ships escaped. The town and harbour of Gijon are still un'der aerial bombardment. The British ship, Stanbridge, owing to damage it received duringi an insurgent air-raid on Saturday, was unable to depart but was beached. The iship has been burning • for three days.
