Harbour Access To Be Provided JACKSON 'S BAY WHARF For South Westland is to be provid:ed with harbour facilities at Jackson 's Bay, making it. possible for this remote part of the country to be developed. a.iid permitting the milling of vast rcsources of timber. Later it may be possible to develop mineral resources which are known to -exist in this area. The- access provided by the harbour at Jackson Js Bay will greatly facilitate the ta-sk of the Publie Works Department in - completing- the road . link- between South Westland and Ota,go. . , Plans for the ha-rbour have been drawn up by the. Publie Works Depari» ment, and provision has been made for the construction of a wharf 5Q0ft. in length, including the approacb, 200ft. of which will be taken up by a quay. It is probable tht tenders will be eallcd for the wharf construction, but it will be necessary for the, deparment to set up the organisation there, including possibly a wireless station, An access road three miles in length from the Arawata River, over a very rugged foreshore, will have to be con'structedIt is considered there will be an adequate depth of water for large ooeangoing vessels to work the harbour. The construction of the harbour- qt Jaeiison's Bay will undoubtedly minimise the possibility of the extension of the West Coast railway. into Southi Westland from Ross, the present rail-. head, which has been strongly urged in recent times, and has , been the ; sul)ject recently of a searching deparfmental investigatioa^ • '
