Pakanui's Impressive Trial
(By
Hastings tracks were fairly busy on Saturday morning when all the Taranaki and Wanganui nominators were given a run along. For horses engaged at these meetings the course proper wa« opened, but others had to be content with the inside grass track. With the recent rain, both eourses were in fine order, there being an absence of any sting. Where not mentioned, the 'foregoing trials occurred on the inside grass track. # * 4i Slippery (R. Colello) and Flame Queen (R. Stowe) were on even terms over fialf a mile, but the latter covered more ground. The time, 51isecs.t1 was fair. * * * Pakanui (I. Briggs), on the course proper, when registering 61i secs. for five furlongs, accompli'shed an impressive trial, easily the best of the morning. His track work is decidedly better tnan his publie outmgs, but his speed is such that he may collect a decent stake any day over a distance as far as a mile. % * # Cotsfield was given two solid rounds of pace work, moving with more vim than he has been doing. This suggests that he will go very close to winning a race for Mrs. Growcott before the expiration of the present lease. * * # The Sandstar gelding (Ireland), from H. Griffith's stable, and Star Lad (A. Griffiths) were not out to make time when running four furlongs in 54i secs. The latter, who was not the best actioned of gallopers when first coming here, is making obvious improvement m this direction. * * # Jacynth (J. Molloy), on the course proper, was again'st the bit when registering 41secs. for three furlongs. The other morning she was taken to the barrier in company with a couple of docile horses and this inclined-to-be-wayward filly stood quietly and went off with her mates, which must have been gratifying to trainer S-. J. Reid, who has been most pa-instaking and patient with the cbestnut three-year-old. « * # On the same track Mahutai (I. Briggs) and Felicitation (B. Stowe) were clocked to run the five in G5secs. with Felicitation going the easier throughout. This filly is not a track galloper, also she has neither grown uor furnished during the winter although looking in fine order. * % * Geira (J. Molloy), also on the course proper, was decidedly under restraint in her effort over half a mile in 51J secs. This mare is as pretty a galloper ln the Bay, and although the writer has no love for Arausio mares, he must admit that this three-year-old bay filly looks like being the goods. P . * * Blue Shirt (B. Stowe) appeared to gallop with much more detcrmination than hitherto when running three-quar-ters of a mile in Imin. 184secs., so maybe the schooling he has been subjected to has benefited hira, # ' «= Royal Minstrel (H. Gilmer) and Buster Brown (R. Marsh) were tried out over five furlongs for the former to. beat the Weathervane gelding by a couple of lengths in 63$secs. # # ^ Padishah ( P . Atkins) strode out freeIy when timed to run his half-raile in fiUsecs., being wide out most of the way. * * Helios (N. Trillo) jumped a little better than the last time schooled, getting away better after landing. He has been anything but a success on the flat, winning but one race in two years' active training, so will need to do a "trot" for owner H. G. Harker to get, his money back, # * # On the course proper, Joe Louis (R. Marsh) moved well over half a mile in filsees. In all probability he will make the Wanganui, trip next week. # # Diana Tetrix (Hunting Song — Tractrix), with apprentice J. McNaughton tu. tlie saddle, on the course proper, ran half a mile in a shade worse than 53
secs. This was the first time this season that a two-year-old here was sent as far as this. The filly appeared as if she could have done better, » ^ # % Larwood (Cullen) was ahead of Daryill (B. Stowe) in their trial over a ehort distance, but were not timed. On the course proper, the stable mates, Gironde (R. MaTsh) and Lindrum (J. Forsyth), were sent half a mile to register the very fair time of 49 4-5secs. Gironde was in front by a length passing the post, but Lindrum could have done better. 5Jr "K® Top Hat (I. Rohloff) and Tormfiy Atkins (N. Trillo) gave a pleasing display over a round of the schooling lenees without the semblance of a blemish. Both go to Wanganui, the former for the hack hurdles and Tommy AtJuns for tho Hunter 's 'chases. * * * Shirred Ribbon (K. Brueur) had the edge on Maine (G. Cameron) afc the end of three-quarters of a mile on the course proper, in lmin. 17|;secs. * # Hamarin (I. Rohloff) was not too sure of herteelf in a schooling essay. eventually refusi,Qg the hurdle in front of the stands, but later, ridden by her trainer, G. W. B. Greeue, jumped three hurdles, including the previously rofused oue, in fair style. ^ ^ 4 Wykemist (J. Walsh) made no mistakes in a round over the country, although risking the brush fences by just elearing the frame work, # # * Kahikatoa (H. Callinan), after leading Hunting Cat (P. Atkins) over the first half of the journey, was not going so well as the latter at the end of a mile in lmin. 47secs. on the course proper. « # * . Gn the same track Cletrac (P. Atkins) went half a second better for the same distance when brought home the last five and a-half furlongs by Soho (R. Marsh). Cletrac left yesterday for Taranaki to complete in the Hunter 's Bracelet on Thursday, # * * Nelumbo (S. Fanning), ^vide out and hard held, dashed over three furlongs on the course proper in 39secs. She is in great heart to tackle the Wanganui hack sprints. # # * The Tractor— -Aeterism gelding, with, N. Trillo on top, for a novice, schooled impressively over a round of the schooling hurdles, * * * Parry (G. Greene) did not impress 5n his schooling lesson, but when brought up agaih improved a little. As a rujle the Lord Quex progeny takes to jumping like ducks to water. *- * Merry Simon (Gascony — Lady Makere) (P. Atkins), Centerpoise (Hunting Song— Monette) (H. Callinan) and Hunting Royal (Hunting Song — Sangfroid) (R. Marsh) were sprinted a couple of furlongs down the straight for the three to cross the line abrea^t, but Merry Simon, if allowed his head, would have held a safe margin. CentTepoise showed improvement, while Hunting Royal, for his initial gallop, muat have pleased his trainer, D. Ducker. • # # The lop-eared chestnut three-year-old filly by Nigger. Minstrel — Enchantment, witb P. Atkins in the saddle, just broke 40secs. for three furlongs.
