Slight Advance on Last Season at Sydney JAPAN NOT OPERATING

(Received 31, 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, Ang. 30. . The new season's wool saies opened to-day, when 13,017 bales were offered. There were 11,930 bales sold, and an additional 6702 bales were sold privatejy, The wools gienerally were well grown, but lighter in condition than last season's clip. The saies opened to keen bidding bn account of Yorkshire, with good support from France and Germany, but Japan was not operating. Compared with the opening . saies last season, prices showed an improvement of from 25 to 30 per cent. on the opening rates at last sale, and an improvement of 5 per cent. eompared with the closing prices at the last saies. The top price to-day was 23|d. The Japanese Minister of Commerce is reported to have told manufacturers at Tokio that the Government desired Japan's wool imports for the coming season to be restricted to half a million bales.
