Canterbury Backs Too Good

CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Unable to counter the brilliant thrusts by the home team's backs, Southland was beaten by Canterbury on Saturday afternpon by 19 points to geven. It was fast, open football on a dry ground, and there was no question of Canterbury 's superiority among the backs, who made all the oj»enings from which scorfes came. The best wero Hooper, the All Black, aud K. S. Mortlock, Who l&St Saturday was not chosCn to play against tho fspriagboks. Canterbury led 16 — 4 at half-tiihe, but in the second half Southland ehow6d more epterprige and delendcd mucli more eilectively. It must be mentioned that only seveh members of the team which won the Ranfurly Shield from Otago played for Southland, and these scven were outstanding, skowing tbat the Canterbury task would have bcen difiieult indced had Southland been at i'ull strength. Tho match was not rcmarlcable for outstanding forward play. Scorers for Canterbury wei-e Hermau, Chinnery (two), Gurrett, Hooper. McAuliffe converted one try aud Herman one. For Southland Thomas potted a goal and Sutherland scored »a w»con\erted try.
