WEAK BOBBY CALVES
Carriers Prosecuted for Gonveying Them The first prosecutions against carriers for conveying weak and immature bebby calves were hoard in the Hamilton Police Gourt. The first defendant was D. J. Breest, of Korsham Downs. The inspector o£ stock, Mr E. A. McKinlay, said that two calves in a truck-load of o 2 wero in a weak and immature condition, being nnder 24 hours old. The father of the defendant said the responsibility for sueh an offence should be placed on the farmer, and not on the carrier. The farmer knew the age of the calves, ■ hut .the carried did not. One day-old calf might be strongei ^ than another calf a week old. If one carrier Tejected a calf, another carrier would pick it np. _ Mr G. K. Sinclair, J.P., said _ho agrecd that the responsibility of ?ecmg that the calvcs wero not immature ehould rest on the farmer, and _ that the law should be altered accordingly. Defendant was convicted and ordered .to pay the costs. Frederick L. Sli6rsoxi, of Taiii'v\iia>^ was charged with conveying weak and ^ immature calves. and with eruelly ill* treating calves. Evidence was given that two calves ' dn a load of 46 were nnder-sized, and,, owing to the overcrowded state of thel truclc, wero trampled on. The space allowed each calf was one and a-half equare feet, instead of two square feet. ' Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay the costs on the first count, and was fined £1 on the second.
