Newspaper Comment Displays Restraint in Tone POWERS EXPRESS SYMPATHY
(Received 28, 12.30 p,m.) RUGBY, Aug. 27. The entire British press expresses indignation at the wounding of Sir Hughe Knatehbull-Hugessen, The Japanese Ambassador, on inatructiohs from his Governmentf, called on Mr. Anthony Eden, Foreign Secretary, to expresa deep regret at the incident. A Foreign Office commumque states that the .Govemment is nbtaiiiing certain further information on the circiimstances, and thereafter will be in a positiou to take appropriate action with the Japanese Government through the Embassy at Tokio. Many ropresentatives of foreign Powers, ineluding the Soviet, France, Gerinany and Chiua called at the Foreign Ofhee to express the sympathy of their GoveTnments at the wotmding of Sir Hughe Knatehbull-Hugessen. Mr. Eden UJagraphed Mr. Cordell Hull, American Secretary of State, expressing sincere thanka for . his message of sympathy and apprcciation of the kind thought which prompted him to send it. Newspaper comment on the incident displays restraint In tone, ihowing that British opinion is itself able to observe a sense of proportion in dealing with wrongs and affronts which British Wfiters recently found desirable to recommend to others. Nevertheless, it revealed that deep indignation is felt. Admiration is expressed for the fortitude with which the wounded Ambassador bore the journey to hospital, and there is keen anxiefy concerning his recovery. The latest message received in LonSon. states that Sir Hughe Knatehbull-Hugessen was rnore comfortable and suffering less pain. Mr/R." Howe,' who'for three years has been counsellor to ihe British Embassy in China, but who recently visited England on leave, is leaving immediately for China to take charge during the Ambassador 's ineapacitation. He intends to travel by air to Saigon.
