REGENT THEATRE

"A STAB IS BORN." "A Star is Born,5 5 which screens tonight, is a film which can be honestly recommended for its brilliant portrayal of the rise from obseurity to fam'e of a young country girl with ambition. The handling of this somewhat stereotyped subject is entirely npvel, and the film is Temarkable for the ability of its actors, and its moving portrayal of the joys and sorrows, the exultation and pothos which mark thd iife of the great. It is a refreshingly new Janet Gaynor who is presented in this picture — a Janet Gaynor who spaTkles with life and sincerity. Praise must be given to Adophe Menjou as a producer, to Fredric March, v. ho gives an excellent portrayal of the one-time idol, now fallen, and, finally, to May Robson, who adds greatly to the humour and sincerity of the film. As the title indicates, the picture porttays the rise of a little oountry girl to Hollywood stardom. In the picture the audience shares with Esther Blodgett, portrayed by Miss Gay nor, the heartaches and bappmess. the gaiety and despair, that go into the ultimate crowhing of a inotion picture etar. Aiid in her travels she visits many of the famdus spots in Hoilywood, which are shown in technicOlour for tne first tiihe. The supporting programme includes "March of Time55 (No 5) and "Mickey5s Cixcus,55 the latest Walt Dsiney cartoon.
