Steady Advance to Shanghai Waterfront NANKING REPULSES RAIDS

WELLINGTON, This Day. The following cablegram was reeeived by the Chinese Consul from Nanking this morning: — "At present the Chinese forces are fighting strongly in the Hongkew and Yangtse-poo sectors (Shanghai zone) and are advancing steadily towards the waterfront. Fighting occurred on the Pinchan front at Meierhling, Ping-Tingshan, Nanliyuan, in the vicinity of Fangshan, and Lianghsiang. The Chinese maintained their positions in the face of a lieavy artillery attack, and later repulsed the enemy in a counter-attack. "On the Nankow front (North China) Chinese defenders made a flank attack last night, inflicting keavy losses upon the aggressors. "Two more Japanese heavy booibers were shot down last night when nine planes raided Nanking, the Chinese political capital, which remains untouched after numerous Japanese airraids lasting ten days. Japanese planes also bombed Ningpo and Nanking yesterday, inflicting minor damage."
