Mr V. McKenzie, of Feilding, is visiting Napier and is the guest of Mr and Mrs V. Wallis, Simla Terrace. Mr C. G, Smith, of Bay Yiew, hus ' been reappointed a member of the Hawke's Bay Land Board. Mr .1. H. Joll, Havelock North, left this morning en route for Suva on a holiday. Mrs Horace Baines, of Te ' Dri, is spending a fortnight in Napier visiting friends. The Hon. T. F. O'Byrne, M.L.C., of Invercargill, returned home after making a holiday cruise to the South Pacific Islands. Mr W. Ross, of the Havelock North Bowling Club, was last night electect president of the Hawke's Bay Bowling Centre for the coining season. Sir Stenson Cooke, general secretary of the Automohile Association of Great Britain, has been invited to make a holiday tour of New Zealand next Mareli. Mr T. Vaughan, Hastngs, was iiiglily commended for his entry in the original song composition class at the Wellington Competition Society' s annual festival yesterday. There were 40' entries in the class, which was won by a Wellington musician. The class is regarded as one of the most important in the festival. Dr T. Vernon Griffiths, oi Dunedin, was the judge. Mr. Alan B. Carter has been appointed editor of the New Zealand Tablet in succession to Mr. L. J. _ Cronin. Mr. Carter has travelled extensively in Great Britain, Ireland and Europe and has spent a considerable time in the Vatican and other famous libraries. He is a well-known contributor to ihany lioman Catbolie publications. Ho will take up his duties on September 1. Mr E. H. Fairbrother, of Hastings, will be tendered a compiimentary social evening to-morrow by Hawke's Bay eiectricians when he will be presented with a gold medal and award gained in a recent examination conducted by the Britisb Cable-Makers' Association. The presentation of .the medal will be made by Mr H. L. Benjamin, engineer to the Hawke's Bay Electric Power Board. ■ Mr Donald R. Davies, of Hastings, who gained his associate elocution pass witli honours in the practical exaniinations lield in Napier by the Trinity College of Music, London, has been notified that his marks were 95 out of the possible 100. It is understood that such high 3 marks have seldom Lecn gained in this examination before. Seventy marks are required for a pass, and 80 for a pass with honours. Mr W. Somerset Smith, who has been treasurer of the Hawke's Bay Bowling Centre for a numbcr of years, did not seek re-election at last uight's annual meeting of tlie Centre, and tributes were paid by the deiegates to his valuerJ services iu the past and to the keen interest he had always taken in bowling generally. Mr J. McLennan, Bluff Hill Club, was elected treasurer iu place of Mr Somerset Smith. Dr. A. JR. Thorne was re-appointed superintendent for a further term of tluee years by the Wellington Hospital Board last night after a long discussion. An amendment to defer making a decision until members had had a full opportunity of studying the terms and remuneration was defeated by 12 votes to 4. Tributes were paid to Dr. Thorne 's ability,. and the hope was expressed that tlie board would not "swap iiorses in midstream." Mr H. D. Cooper, who has been appointed manager for Dalgety and Co., Lfd., at Napier in succession to Mr T. A. Moodie, is manager ot the firm's Te Kuiti branch. Mr Cooper joined the staff of the company as stock agent at Te Kuiti in November, 1917, and iu July, 1920, took over the duties of auctioneer at that centre. Tavo years later he was promoted to auctionecr and head of tlie stock department at Auckland, which position he occupied until July 1, 1928, when lie returned to Te Kuiti as manager. Mr Cooper will take up liis new duties at Napier early in Uctober.
