AUCKLAND, Last Night. Of the fourteen three-year-olds that raced at Ellerslie last Saturday, not one contested the raoe the distance of which was fixed at a mile ; they took on the two. six-fiirlongs contents in preference. It js not the. practice in this country to race three-year-olds beyond six or seven furlongs so early in the season, although if memory serves one aright they are not so chary of doing so in Australia, for there is a weight-for-age race in 3outh Australia open to all ages, run over a mile in the tliird week in Then at Caulfield a couple of weeks ago one of last year's leading Australian two-year-olds, Ajax, an early favourite for the Derbies and and Melbourne Cup, ' won at % mile under 9.4. in the case of this present three-year-old across the Tasman his trainer now has the job in front of hirp to keep hira up- to his .best for the rick prizes between now and Noveniber ;and it take? *a ^ood mentor to. do this. The necessity for trainers to have their three-year-olds at top so early in the season is not so urgent, for the first Derby is not. to be run until early in Noyember, or five weeks after the A.J.O. Derby at Randwick. The classic races they have to prepare for are the "SYanganui, Avondale and Great Northera Quilxeaa contests, all run over a mile. • A Cood Hack. Two of the juveniles that raced las1» week at Ellerslie took on the open sprint. these being Huntingmore and Bachmor King, and their showing has already been discussed,- Best of tlxe dozen that ran in the six furlongs Sylvia Park Handicap was undo.ubtedly Barricade, who finished a very close third. He was big as a two-year-old and he has not grown a great deal since, although he has developed in many respects and he now looks a good horse. His effort was first class when it is ' stated that he drew 2Q at the barrier ' and was one of the pacemgkers insido ; a couple of furlongs. This 'Aus'trahan ' bred cojtr-he is ]jy. Baralong from Ednaver— is trained by A. Oook, whose only. other. three-yeaj-old started pn : Saturday was Huntingmore. The latter will prpbably .he this trainer's Avqndalo : Guineas candidate, whilA Barricade wjll : have an exepllent ckance of capturing J one of the valuahle hack classics, which incidentally are. each worth as much to thp. winner as the Guineas. Saccone must rank next best to Barricade qf "th$ juveniles seen out, in the Sylvia Park Handicap, fpr after being well back for most of the way he came home very fast, to get'fourth place, al- ! though not pfBcially credited with that. position. As the Surveyor colt was not cpnsidered to be forward enough to win, his showing must have been very pleasing to his owner, the Fijiau sportfman^ Mr A, B. Pearce. Saccone should soon get out of the inaiden class, hard and all that these events are to win f in the early spring. Took the B|t After the great pace he revealed In his three races last season, the last ending in a win, Rainier was one of the disappointments in the hack sprint. However, there were contributing qircumstances, for he struck trouble early and was sent right back to last, after which he tried to take charge of his rider. The Vaals-Ti gelding is ipclined to be wayward, but this may be over- - come with rpcing. Of course be may not like righthanded tracks, whiqh is the way round where is is trained, and when he won at Whangarei he was running lefthanded. A nice pair pf threeryear-olds wero Silver Glow and High Sea, both Aus-trahan-bred. They have been a lo«g time coming to hand and in the case of the latter he is still a bit on the small side. High Sea is by Heroic from Lady Seaborn and Silver Glow by Silverburn from Sundance. The latter i« a nice colt, not yet ready. Both are in the Avondale Guineas,. whilp Silver, Glow is also jn the special liack races. Bronzp Lady is nothing out of tbe ordiuary in appearance, yet sbe wenc quite a lair race in this, her first appearance. She is by Broiize Eagle from Lady llobinson, fiy Surveypr. Iler dam was very fast, but errptiq at tbe barrier and she eveutually found her way on to the schooling list ; that was nine years ago, and Bronze Lady is her first foal, O11 breeding alone, however, easily thp. most interesting three-year-old in tbe hack sprint was Marie's Acre, by Acre from Lady Marie, dam of brilliaut gallopers Bay Blonde, Gay Sliiela, Gay Sheik and Gay Brunette, Yery rnucb on. the big side in condition, Marie's Acre showed up at the finish and it is obvjous that she. bas inherxted at least some of the family speed, A juvenilp that bad been showing up rather promisingly in track displays was Obmabaj and he was lost in the crowd in the raee itself. He is by Acre from Wairarapa, dam of good wiimers in Auriculus, Alanriaena and Te Waipu. Others of this age that were seen out at the Pakuranga meeting were Siega, a filly by Siegfried from Auriculus and thus a close relative of Ohmaha just previously mentioned ; Te Poto, a filly by Tep, Tray from Manietta, and Raiaya? a gelding by Acre from Diamond Queen, a modest perl'ormer of a few years ago, It will he .ludged from this formidable list pf jureuiles that there is going tq be plenty of materiai for coming maiden races at least.
