USEFUL WASTE GROUND
Every year, and almost in every garden, there are crops useless, and, indeed lihrmful. .Much. nourisbpient is taken away from the ordinary crops by commQn weeds, and we have to- fght against .without • any. -rest from the task. But there is no excuse for alloWing- useless 'crops to- remain in/the garden, impoverishihg the ! soil, and there -r - are many such; at 'this" season. . The -peas are • gathered froin cejrtain'r'ows,- but the old.! plants are' left.in the ground; a\good rain comes,; and , they ; begip to - grow again,. ,frqm : the base. .The^ haulm should -be pulled; directly the pods are gathefed,* the ,soil • loosened. with the Dutch .hoe, all wee.d.s cleared off, and a good *dusting,of -sooLapplied. , . Lovel anyc ridges * and s sow i turnip seeds. -There are some good > yellowfleshe.d varieties' as well as wliite, which quickly come to maturity at this' season. The potatoes should - be lifted directly 'they, are matured enough, and' - the ground .planted' forthwith in gre'ens. . Old. lettuee that are running to seed rob the - soil of "much goodn'ess. * Do not cut, but pull up these, and sow ra'dishes in the plot. Old stumps of cabbages and cauliflowers, are, perhaps, the greatest ' robbers of the soil. When these are pulled ^.nd hurned, dig in some well-rotted manure and' sow turnip seeds, • as - the resultant plants will 'get the benefit of surf acevmanuring. * . Th'e same.remafks apply to all .other kinds . of plants that are. now useless. Their place should be .talcen .by . gi;eens or quick-nmt'uring qrops, however simplo the latter may 'be.
