EVENING OF FOLK SONGS AT WAIPUKURAU B.M.S.
* A programme of folk music was giveri at tbe AugUst meeting of the Cehtral Hawke's Bay branch of tlie British .Music Society.' An interesting series of" instrumental * and . vocal numbers «was preseuted. Tlie pianoforte - solos wero modern eompositlons • basdd on folk melodies, and the vocal solos, trios aiid quartettes were arrangemcnta /of ' folksongs. The ineeting was held in the Women' s Rest, Waipukurau. There was a large attendance. The room .was decorated with spring flowers, the big log' fires creating . a cheerful atmospliere. The following programme was preseuted. — ...... "Land of Our Fathers" (arr. Walford Davies) and "Land o' the Leal" (Isaditronai), sung by Mesdames H. J'l Coats, J. L. Braithwaite, Misses B: Bryce and H. Johnstone. This " quartette also sung "Early oue Morning"' (arr. Walford Davies); "I lovo Sixpence" (Geoffrey Shaw), "Drink'to me Only" (Walford Davies), and "Who'U Buy my Posiesp" (a round). Vocal solos: ' "Gatherihg Daffodils" (Artliur ' Somerville)',' "Roving in th'e Dew" (Geo.'1 Bullerworth), Mrs P. 0. Anderson. "O, the Oak ahd' the Ash" (Nortli Country), 'and' "Near Woodsted Town" (17th century), Mr N. Tilley/ "To People who Love 'G arden s" (weaving lilt, M. Kennedy- Fraser),. Mrs J. L. Braithwaite. ; ^ Pianoforte solos,. .rendered- .tiy. Mrs Gerald Wilton, were^ "Country. Gardens" (Percy Granger, . "Sing. a _Song of Sixpenee" ' (Leo Livens), "Cherry. Ripe" (Cyril Scott), 'fShepherds. .Hqy" (Percy Grainger), and "Little. . • PoJIy Flinders" (Leo Livens). Miss. H. Johnstone played "All Tlirough the night," (Joseph Holbrook). The. maiatrio — Messrs J. C. Windle, V. Par-„ sons and E. L. Haldane— preseuted : "Dasliing Away with the Smootliing Iron" (Cecil Sharp), "Ob, No . Johu" (Edith Brann), "The Sea Shanties "Billy Boy",and "Shanandoah" (Ricliard Terry). The String Trio, MessrsJ. C. Windle (violin), Mr H. S. Cottrell" ('cello), and Mrs F. .V. . Ward" (piano),. contributed the overture "The Caliph of Bagdad" (Borildien); , . , . Piano accompaniments "were 'played by Mesdames P. Oi Anderson, F. V. Ward and Miss H. Johnstone.
