WOOLWORTHS HOLD SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL BALL AT HASTINGS
Particularly attractive deeorations wero a feature of the very suceessful an'nual' ha 11 arranged by the staff of the Hastings branch of YVoolwortlis (.N.Z.), Ltd., wliich was enjoyed by a largc number of dancera last evening. The ball was in the Oddfellows' Hall, whieb was decorated to. lepresenfc a snow storm with long hanging streamers and tiDy pieces of cotton wool most eh'ectively arranged. The lights and windows were sliaded with deep blue .streamer sbades and round the 'walls were receipt tiekets from every New Zealand brancli of the tirm. On the stage stood a large snow mati and smali trees in pots were covered with snow flakes. Les. Henry's orekestra sat on the stage and gave an excellent dance programme. Unusiial extras, which were very mucli at>preciated, were played by tlie Hastings aecordeon band. A delicious supper was set out in the supper-roorn upon long tables decorated with tall crystal vases and ieoland poppies. During the evening a beartily ai> plauded military. item was gfiven by pupils of the Misses Patston and Grantham, costumes of wbite satin braided with gold being worn by the 20 taking part. Tlie committee responsible for the arrangements . were Misses H. King, P. Garvey, M. Lewls, J. Hales and 1, Garnett ; Messrs U. Henderson, F. Sullivan M. Boyle and C. Cook. Among those present were : — Mr C. Henderson, the Hastings manager, and Mrs Henderson, who wore a gown of deep lake-blue crushed velvet With eorsage slashed at the back and short puffed sleeves. A posy of gold llowers was worn at the neck and siie had a short white fur coatee. Mr I. Phillips, the Napier manager, and Mrs Phillips, whose gown was of black georgette with a red corsagie posy and white fur coatee. Members of the stalf were: — Miss P. Garvey, black panne velvet with Peter Pan collar and cuffs finishing the short sleeves oi; white velvet. Miss H. King, gown of green matelasse threaded with gold and worn with a black coatee. Miss I. Garnett, black panne velvet with draped sleeves and natural spray of pink sweet peas *and freesies. Miss J- Hales, red talfeta with draped sleeves and brilliunt belt clasp. Miss M. Lewis, Kenya red rippled satin witlr gio'ld flowers at tlie back, and gold kid belt. Miss E. Wright, blue suede cr'epe with a tuuic eli'eet edged with silver sequiusi Miss R. Allau, rose pink satin evening blouso worn with a black satin skirt. Miss McKay, pink georgfette with bands of pastel ' sliaded satin edging the full skirt. Miss M. Wyatt, palest lemon ernbossed chiffon velvet with a, wide stitched belt. Miss K. Crawford, blue cloque with silver lined sJashed sleeves and fong scarT/draperies. MrSs M. Waterhouse, dafEodil satin with flame flowers at tbe square neck. Miss L. Gurry, orchid mauve jratterned Srviss voile with a deep violet velvet cape. Miss M. Laredo, daffodil cotelle, with flat velvet flowers outlining the square neck. Miss E. Geake, wbite talfeta wrth corded skirt und a . red rose ab tbe neck. Miss U. Itoil, blue matelasse witb pulied sleeves and silver collar. Miss K. Douglas, lernon coin-spot-ted tafl'eta witb ilared basque. Miss i. Itoil, bla'ek velvet with pink velvet eorsage flower and coatee. Miss M. Kavauagb, black panne velvet with red and white eorsage posy. Miss J. Batt, ivory satin with full skirt and draped sleeves trimmed with black and gold. Miss D. Davis, turquoise blue tuffeta trimmed with killing.
