BRITISH PATIENCE
That Britain is being sorely tried hy the state of warfare in both fcjpain and China is apparent from the latest cables. Eor centuries Britain has lived and prospered by her trade abroad, which is the life blood of the nation. How vitally interested she is in Shanghai is evident from the statement that British capital invested in tho city and nearby district totals £180,000,000. Fire diamage alone during tho reeent fighting is said to amount to £3 ,000,000. In tho Spanish war zone British. shipping is now subject to torpedo attaeks hy unknown submarine assailants, and tho effect on the London Stock Exchange is anything but reassuring, while "insuranco premiums on ships entering tho war zones have mounted alarmingly. There axe plenty of fireaters both in Great Britain and elsewhere who deplore the ahsence of retaliation, but like Brer Kabbit, Britain just koeps on doing nothing. Tho British lion has always been noted for its remarkable patienee, and therein lies jart of the nation's greatness. There is probably much more going on 'behind the scencs than the public knows about. Britain is earning the respect of the world for her attempt to preserve peace.
