Hawke's Bay has retained, ehall X sayv pride of position, in being the ' only team in the first grade outside the big centres. Two yeorg ago Poveriy Bay and Waikato were both admitted to the A grade after having won the B grade, but Hawke's Bay beat both these teams easily. Poverty Bay wae not represented at the last tournament but our team beat the Waikato teajni by a big margin. This year sees both these teams back in the second gradey A Grade An Honour. ; Although our team has been beateh by the big centres each year, the fact still remams that Hawke's Bay is an A grade team, and in my opision it is more honour xor them to be af the bot tom of this list than it is for a, team to win the B grade. However, therS are a lot of people always yery disapi pointed to see Hawke's Bay at the bot« tom, but the players have a much befr ter chance of improvement of play when matched against , a superioe team. Hawke's Bay ran Canterbury toi one goal, 17 — 1'6, in their firat game last year, and gave Wellington a sum prise, too. Hitherto the opponent* pnf in. their emergencies for the Hawke's Bay match, but the last two years they have seen fit to play their best teamJ Our team has made a name fo.r itself by breaking up completely the combii nation play of its opponents, The cap* tain of the .winning team last year made special comment on the fine game played by Hawke's Bay against her team, and it was the opinion of many that Hawke~'s Bay would not 'be at the bottom of their grade for .very long. It is a pity that Napier saw fit to 'withdraw their players this year, more so when it is known that the majority. of these players are not now among the Napier representative team for £0* torua, ~ / _/ Honour For Hastings, A great honour has come to Hastings and Hawke 's Bay this year in the news that Mrs. S. K. Hingston, one of tha Hawke's Bay selectors, has been appointed sole selector of the South lsland team for the match against the - North at the conclusion of the tournament. Mrs. Hingston is to be congratulated for having earned the faith of the New Zealand Basketball Aseocia- • tion, ah3~with her long association of the game, I know that she will carry out this position exceedingly well, Minor Grade Team. ! 1 For the first time, .the Hawke's Bay TJnion is entering a minor team in tha tournament. This consists of the best players from, Central Hawke's Bay and they have formed a team much superior to any former Central team. On Saturday last at Waipukurau they defeated, . the Napier representative team by 22 to I?, and, to my knowledge this is the first 'time that Central have won a match of this kind. Hastings are to meet Napier at Nelson Park, Napier, nefct Saturday afternoon, and although the best team from here may not oe available for the afternoon, an interestig game should result, Injury to Player. 1 It is with reg^et we have to report tho illness of one of the players, V. Wall. A poisoned hand has cancolled, her trip away, and we can only wish her a very speedy recovery from this painful complaint. Her place is being taken by M. Schroder, and she should, prove an asset to the team. The players are to leave Napier by the Hawke's Bay Motor Co.'s car at 7 a.m. on Monday on which I hope will be a very pleasant as well as successful trip. Miss G. Symes is to captain. the team, with Miss Jean Joll as vice-. captain, and the players will be in the very capable hands of Miss K.
