Training Runs in Preparation for Event SATURDAY'S PRQSPECTS

(By

Due attention has been given to some solid training by most club members on the last two club runs. a At the run held over the championship course the day of the Test match, some runners, keen to hear the Test over the radio, contented themselves with doing only one lap. Full advantage is not heing taken of the opportunity "by the club's representatives in Saturday races of practising over the course. By being able to negotiate the varioUs fences and ohstacles easily and quickly, much energy and time can. he saved, which might mean a lot in a hard race, At' last week's run from Tomoana freezing works, W. Apperley and N. Ghapman laid an excellent trail, covering open ground over which the two packs could maintain, a good pace. Out for his first run since his illness H. E. Taylor ran as well as could be expected, and he might yet he a force to be reckoned with on Saturday. Leading the fast pack, B. Andersen appeared to be moving more freely than usual, so perhaps his consistent training is bringing its reward. Alex Robertson and I. Dyer did not waste any time on the run either. Of the slow pack A. Taylor had no difficulty in being first in. N. Taylor, second, has jmproved a lot on his last year's form. . | Judging by form shoWn on this run,, the local club will have most of its' representatives taking the field on Saturday fitter .than previously this season. Provincial Championship. The an'nual Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay championships will be the fourth to be held and the second of them run in Hastings. Two grades, A and B, are run, "with an individual title and teams race in each. The present holders are: — A Grade. — Individual, H. E. Taylor (H.); teams' race, Hastings. B Grade.— H. Marshall (H.) ; teams' race, Hastings. At tho time of writing the Hastings Club 's teams have net been published, but both the A and B grade teams should be able to retain their respeetive titles. The individual winners are well bidden this year. For the A grade title, A. Hughes, of the Napier Harrier Club, looks a likely winner, failing H. E. Taylor. Hughes will not have things all his own way, as Hunt and Anderson (H.) will be there to chase bim all the way. Alex Robertson is also capable of making things interesting. As all the A grade contestants have at various times beaten each ofher, the raeing should be the keenest yet seen locally. The presence of a team from Dannevirke, and possibly one from Gisborne, adds greatly to the interest in the B grade event. Here a good tussle should eventuate between J. Mclntyre (Dannevirke) , J. Dyer and A. Taylor (Hastings). Mclntyre won the B grade section at the big rally in Dannevirke earlier this season, but on this occasion he will have to run over new ground. Also making the trip with the Dannevirke team is A. Preston, the first club-champion of the Hastings Club. Perhaps not as speedy as of yore, he is a big help to the Dannevirke ClubComing Fixtures. "With the season quickly drawing to a close the following fixtures remain: — August 28. — Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay cross-country championship, Racecourse, Hastings. . September 4.— Road relav Tace, Napier v. Hastings; Toute, Hastings to Napier. September 11. — Field day, Racecourse. v September 18. — Invitational run, Bute, Pakowhai road. September 25. — Annual road race, Napier-Hastings (official closing day).
