PIONEERING

Tlie other week-end I took some chaps out to Robm Hood's place to take them for their axeniansliip part of the first-elass badge. Tbey were all quite good in tbe practical part, and tlicy all knew the theoretical section because I had told them all that only a few weeks before. Just for the benefit of the others who will be having a try at this work one day, and also for. the sake. of all the others who . use an axe I am going to put in tliese notes on axemanship from "Gilcraft's Pioneering." "The fact that the axe is the normal tool of a Scout who goes to eamp does not ■ seein to be sufficiemt for many gcouters to realise tliat every scout should b© to|d tlie safety rules for axemanship and ■ shown how to use an axe beforehand. A liand axe is quite as dangerous a weapon as a felling axe, and because it is in more constant use should be treated with more respect than it usually gets.
