An Australian sportsman who attended the Wellington winter meeting and the Grand National* meeting was particularly annoyed by the laek of consideration shown towards horses and riders by sending them into the birdcage and to the post so long before the start of a race. His romarks particularly applied to Trentham, where the weather was much more- wintry than at Riccarton. It is more than sufficient to say that Mr G. R. Hunter, M.L.C. (racing pai'tner of the Hon. P. C. Webb) won the Grand National Steeplechase with Noeturnus. It was a very popular win as a sporting appreciation of success in a great race, and the political flag was forgotten in the congratulations to a sportsman. In other words, Mr. Hunter was congratulater as the owner of the winner of the Grand National Steeplechase as a sportsman, and not as a horse owner ranking as a power in the political world. 1 ' Sentinel.
