NEW PROVINCE'S NAME
"Northland" Wins Over "Kauri" and "Bledisloe" After a lively discussion, the Whangarei Borough Council decided to support the suggestion that "Northland" should be the name for the proposed new province. Mr A. T. Brainsby said that "Northland" directed the stranger to the considerahle area in the North, so that visitors would not be in the same "miserable state as Rudyard Kipling was in when he thoughit Auckland city was the end of New Zealand.'' The Mayor, IVIr W. Jones; I don't like any of the ttames which have been proposed, but "Northland" comes first because it is more descriptive. "I believe we can get all we want without ohonging our name. The establishment of the North Auckland Land iioard's headquarters iu Whangarei would be of much greater importance than the coining 0f the Supreme Court." Mr E. G. W. Tibbits: The North has been associated with poor gumlands for too long and to adopt the name "Kauri" would convey to many that we admitted these conditions still exist. . Amendments favouring "Bledisloe" and "Kauri" were defeated by sevea votes to three, and the motion was carried.
