Flood Tide for Meibourne Cup

AHCKLAND, Last Night. By the Wanganella from Auckland this week the Takanini horses Flood Tide and Miss Lovelock were shipped, their destination being Meibourne. The deeds of Flood Tide are well known, but his companion is a maiden and she has shown a bit oi speed on the tracks, so she should be a proposition on t.he other side if she continues to make headway. Flood Tide looks well and he should have another successful season. He is engaged in both the Oaulfield Cup and the Meibourne Cup, in each of which he is weighted at 8.9, so that op the score of his handicap he is not harshly treated. The Tidal gelding has liad a unique record in the Auckland province, for he won all three big mile- ' and-a-half handicaps decided last season. He started off by winning the last Mitchelson Cup at his first up, this perfotmance being impressive. In the Auckland Cup he did not have a good spin, and he made amends by captur- [ ing the A.R.C. Handicap on the third day of that fixture. | Of Flood Tide's ability to handle l bad ground there is not the slightest ; doubt, for he won the mile and a half I handicap event On the second day of • the autumn meeting at Ellerslie, the ground being very heavy. On these three successes alone it looks as if Flood Tide's best distance is a mile and a half, although his conneetion are confident that he will stay two miles just as well. It has been known for some time that the Meibourne Cup is to be Flood Tide's speeial mission, but as the Caulfield Cup cornes before that race, and in view of the gelding 's liking for the latter distance, one and a half miles, it is presumed that he will be allowed to start in both big events, in which he will carry a good deal of Auckland support. .
