GATE PA RESTORATION
Suggestion of Palisades TAURANGA, Aug. 18. Reporting on the restoration of the site of the battlo at Gate Pa, Mr. A. H. Benham said at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce that the trcnches would bo built up with turf, and the edges marked with Waimapu stone. Automobile Association signs would be erected, and the association would also provido signs on the site of tho Te Ranga battle, some iniles southwafd of Gato Pa, where the Maoris were defeatod. Hon. B. C. Robbins, M.L.C., suggested that palisades should be erected at Gatc Pa. Tho Maoris had promised previously to assist with palisading. 'He also nrged that a memorial cairn should be erected. Ho believed' that the Government would assist. Mr. F. N. Christian suggested that something should be done to preserve the Te Ranga site. There was also a Maori fortification at Omanawa, which was tho finest he had seen in the district.
