EARLY NEWSPAPERS
Was Auckland Professor Misled ? A report from Auckland that a collection of special issixes of early English newspapers dating back to 1500 had been presented to the Auckland University College Library by Professor F. P. Worley is iuclined to be misleading. Several of the issues were described by Professor J. Rutherford, of Auckland, who made a report on thern, as probably unique iu New Zealaud. It would appear, hojvever, that the issues presented to the university are a series of reprints produeed about 50 years ago, in which caso .they are not unique, for sets of thexn are in the possessiQU qf at lcast two Hastings residents. Oue of these is iu tli'o possession of Mr A. ltosenherg, and anotlxer was exhibitcd afc tlie exhibition of historio newspapers hcld ub the Hasthiga High biqlioyi eiulier this month. A set consjstina of ihe special issues mentioued in tho report from Auckland was priuted under the tit.le of "Reprints of Tho Times and other early JJnglish Newspapers," axid published by SUber and Flexning, Wood street, LQudoxx, at oue shifiing a copy. The set is bound in an orange-colour-ed papef cover. Unfortunately there is hq indication printed on the newspapers themselves to sho\y that they are reprints and thus once they are separated there is every possibilit'y of a xnistake being creafed. The reprints were produeed over 50 years ago so that the copies are now bearing niax:ks of age, making ihe tasli of ideuti lying them even more difiicuit. Mr Roseixberg bought liis set in Wellington wlien he waa a bqy.
