NANKING & TOKIO CONSIDERING PROPOSALS
(Received 20. 12.30 p.m.) RTJGBY, Aug. 19. The British proposals for the withdrawal of Chrneso and Japanese armed forces from Shanghai are under examination at Nanking and Tokio, aud representations have been made by Britaiu in i'aris and Washington to secure co-operation of the Freuck and American Governments. According to Fress messages from Paris, the JFrench Government has instructed its ambassadors at Nanking and Tokio to support the British plan. British troops under ordcrs to proceed to China in the ordinary course of reliefs which bcgau nest month are: Second Battalion, Royal Seots, at Lahore, and lrirsb Battalion, Middleses Regimeht, at Singapore. Both moves may be expedited, but so far only the Middlesex Battalion is under orders of readiness, 3t is sailing by the Holt liner Menelaus and will subsequently proceed to Shanghai in a warship, According to a Shanghai Press telegram, 900 more British women and children jeft fjhere to-day for Hongkong,
